Tina Elkins Photography and Styling: Flowers

I love flowers! They are by far my favorite subject matter and I look forward to photographing them in all seasons and for all reasons! This page is a running list of floral shots, without much order. I would like to show some of my favorite floral shots and maybe give a little info on the flowers. I have to handle and arrange a lot of cut flowers, so I will throw in some info here and there on that too.

As a cut flower dandelions are a nightmare! Anyone who has picked a posy of dandelions or who has been generously gifted a little bouquet of dandelions by a little child knows they just don't last. I seem to get requests for shots of dandelions when they are not around, so I have had the fun of trying to make fake ones. I have tried a lot of things to fake this common weedy flower, but it is nearly impossible. I finally found some fakes online, but they aren't too convincing. Nothing is as delicate as the real thing!

Large pink peony on vintage books. One of the easiest flowers to love, these old fashioned, lightly scented luscious flowers can be tough to arrange. Some varieties look like big balls of kleenex on camera (like the white ones below), but others like this pink one have a little bit of structure. The outer petals of of this variety are nicely shaped and pretty flat which makes a nice contrast to the very fluffy inner petals.

Fluffy double peonies with blue tweedia on a chippy old table. Tweedia is amazing- I buy it at the floral wholesale supplier; strange plant- kind of a milky sap, but the most vibrant true blue flowers you will ever see.

These are old fashioned David Austen hybrid roses with zinnias, ornamental chives and stock.
Shown with some of my favorite props from the AG prop room- an old chippy white cupboard and some great green depression glass that I have started buying. The green acts like a neutral color when I shoot outdoors so just like white on white, the flowers stand out in contrast. Purple, deep pinks and greens is such a refreshing color palette too.
